The world in my imagination feels wider, freer, and warmer than reality. That said, it doesn’t mean my real life lacks these qualities—I simply want to share that imagining is one of my joys. We do not rely on farming for our livelihood. Our ultimate goal is self-sufficiency and living in harmony and joy with others who share similar values. How to create such a world is at the heart of my imagination, and it guides much of what I practice in life. Our farming approach is small-scale and diverse, focused not on maximizing yield but on growing what we eat. My stay at Kyu-hong a.k.a 노각 was truly wonderful. In the tiniest village close to Jinan (close to Jeonju) he and his family live a serene fulfilling life, surrounded by nature, farmland and rolling mountains. I met his wife, daughter and son who are all lovely people as well and I can't forget the Chunsik, the cutest Golden Retriever who I was able to take on walks around the village as I pleased. The work varied day by day, 노각 is a carpenter so I helped him build some raised beds for an educational farming project he is organising this summer. Other days consisted of fertilizing the land with the help of his son and then again, other days were sort of quiet. The emphasis is on cultural exchange and learning from eachother, rather than a rigorous farming routine. Other tasks included some housework, heating up and prepping meals, dishes, etc. I was their first WWOOFER so I think we were both figuring out the exact flow of things. I stayed in an independent cabin overlooking their land and the greater village which was a spectacular view. Since the village is 500m above sea level it can get quite chilly at night but an electrical heater was provided. Meals were plentiful and delicious. I had a wonderful and meaningful stay with Kyu-hong and his family and would recommend this stay to anyone looking to unplug and experience something unique, warm and serene.
